“2010 MatchBook Syrah (Dunnigan Hills, California)
I am a big fan of the MatchBook wines which are part of the Crew Wine Co. Portfolio. They are wines that over-deliver for the price. The first wine I ever tasted from MatchBook was the Tempranillo, which turned out to be a big hit at the store, and I thought it was an incredible value. This Syrah has everything in it for the serious syrah lover. MatchBook Winery is located in the Dunnigan Hills AVA in the Sacramento Valley and has a Mediterranean like climate. The largest winery in this AVA is RH Phillips which you may be familiar with since they produce Toasted Head Chardonnay.
90% Syrah and 10 % Cabernet Sauvignon this syrah has a brooding nose of bread crust, blackberries and black plums. If you have the patience, let this breath a little and the aromas pop. Otherwise, they are a little restrained. In the mouth the wine is tight and bright with an almost meat like quality to it (venison perhaps). Flavors of mint, cassis and blueberry come through on the front of the palate with a nice intensity and vibrant acidity. There is a little citrus element that comes through on the mid-palate that follows into the finish. It is blueberries meet citrus with a splash of smoke and mint. This syrah has a lot of muscle to it and is well integrated. I like it now, but it will definitely age well over the next 3-5 years and if you have the patience I believe you will be rewarded. Pair it up with some lamb or BBQ ribs and WOW! 90 points”
